What is RSS Reporter?

RSS Reporter is a web-based tool that allows you to create Atom or RSS Feeds from SQL Server queries. Feeds are compliant with RSS 2.0 specifications and can be consumed in devices, browsers or apps that support the RSS standard.

Why RSS Feeds? An RSS Feed give you a live view of the data without having to use specialized app to do it. Even though the RSS format is not as popular as it used to be, there are plenty of apps, mostly free of charge or open source, that still consume RSS feeds.

How do you create a feed? Any SQL Server query can be turned into an RSS feed. You can also use the built-in feeds provided by the RSS Reporter related to the database space and SQL Server jobs, feeds that you will find useful.

Atom and RSS Feeds

RSS Reporter generates both Atom and RSS Feeds, compliant to the RSS 2.0 specifications. Feeds can be consumed on any app or device that support the standard.

You can create RSS feeds from the output of any SQL Server query. Just enter the query in the RSS Reporter editor, click on the "create" button and you're done. You can also add filtering and sorting fields, which are useful when the source query contains too many columns.

Web-Based Interface

RSS Reporter allows you to create and view feeds via a web-based interface. A separate admin interface allows you to manage user access and permissions.

There are plenty of options that allow you to customize the feed settings. You can choose, for example, the feed url type, between a parameter-based url or a web-friendly url. You can generate filtering and sorting fields for the feed data, customize the feed title and many more...

Built-in and Custom Feeds

In addition to your own feeds, RSS Reporter provides a few built-in feeds that you will fund useful:
  • Database space and size feed: Contains various indicators, both numerical and graphical, related to the database allocated space and size.
  • Job definition feed: Contains the SQL Server jobs, their steps and the statements executed on each step.
  • Job execution history feed: Contains a summary of the job execution history, as well as details for each step.
